It was quite an unexpected find, halfway up a grassy hill in a paddock filled with sheep on a rainy New Zealand day.
At first I thought it was a modern piece of bone but I was at least 6km (3.5mi) from the ocean and this piece of very much fossilized bone was covered in barnacles! It led me to an exposed bit of old seabed further up the hill covered in fossil shells
