Rainy day petrified wood hunt on the Kawai river. Found one tiny piece and not much else. Good to be out and about though!
Some Waipara River jasper I had cut and polished. It looks like it has seams of some metal running through it. 😁 Comment if you would like it, I'll draw a random winner next week and send it along.
My first crab prep is coming along nicely! The bottom half has turned to iron pyrite. Still a few hours to go 😁 Tumidocarcinus Giganteus crab I collected myself.
An interesting rock I found on the Kaikoura coastline last weekend. Not sure if it's some form of flint or jasper that is brecciated. Let me know in the comments if you have any idea please 😁
Some blue lace agate I had polished up recently. This specimen is from Brandberg in Namibia. Traded it with a rockhound buddy in South Africa.
Early morning fossil hunt at my favourite beach. Found some amazing crab and gastropod . @dickie_dickson found a concretions containing something that looks suspiciously like ribs 😲
It's starting to feel warm enough to brave the rivers again! Was looking for petrified wood in the Ashley river this morning, didn't find much but had a blast.
Didn't find any fossils today but managed to find a few shells and enjoyed seeing the sun out! Anyone know what the names of these shells are?
Had time for a quick 1 hour petrified wood hunt driving back from today. Managed to bag 4 pieces including one beautiful round. Really good growth rings and colour on them. Swipe for more pics.
Mauisaurus Haasti plesiosaur, the largest plesiosaur species at over 8m and was found off the coast of New Zealand. This is the specimen at the Kaikoura museum and you are free to touch it 😁🦕
New fossil hunting grounds for the weekend - Kaikoura. Hoping to find some Cretaceous era fossils tomorrow and maybe some pet wood. At the very least I'll see some beautiful scenery and seals 😁🐳🐋 beautiful
Had a quick hunt for petrified wood this afternoon and managed to find a medium sized piece with a bit of character to it. It has a knot in it which is new for me! There has been some heavy rain this side so a whole bunch of new material has been washed down. Swipe for some close ups.
Snowy rockhounding trip at the Hinds River. Came across this pelvis, that looked suspiciously like a mask, just sitting in the snow, not creepy at all! Swipe for more pictures from the hunt.
Big piece of fossil bone, probably from a whale or dolphin, I found this weekend. Waiting for that day I find a skull or a complete flipper!
Some fossilised coral from yesterday's hunt. It was hiding inside a concretion that I split open. Let me know the species if you have any idea. It's from a Miocene area.

Found a gigantic fossil crab today! Clocking in at 22kg (50lbs) and 32cm wide with the tips of the legs sticking out either side, this is going to be a absolute unit. Hoping for a massive claw in there 😁 I've included a crab from Washington, USA for scale. No idea how to prep it, anyone got any suggestions? Thanks for a great day out @jordonz_gemz!
Strange find of the day, anyone have an idea what it could be? Its definitely organic and not fossilised.
This is my first proper piece of fossilized wood I found. It's from the Cretaceous period and I was lucky enough to get a full round - a complete limb cross-section, that was stuck in a muddy embankment. You can even still see the growth rings! Thanks to @chris_caine_88 for showing me the spot.
A very mossy agate I dug out of a small, freezing stream in Canterbury. It was my first large agate I had ever found and blew my mind when it was cut and polished! I used a torch to backlight it in the one photo. Thanks @chris_caine_88 for showing me the spot!
