A rather worn Metacarcinus novaezelandiae I came across today. Might be worth removing some of the rock to have a peek at it. A shame the claws are so worn away. πŸ¦€πŸ¦€

I'll be showing some of my fossils and giving a short talk on some of the fossils I have found over the last while at the Christchurch Mineral and Lapidary Club at 110 Waltham Road, Christchurch. Entrance is $5 I think as a club guest. All welcome 😁 I have a sneak preview of something pretty cool I've found 🀐 Thursday 10 Sept 2020 at 7 30pm

Time to play my favourite Sunday night game, fish-or-not-fish, with my latest fossil find 😁 found this little bone cluster yesterday and the there appears to be a very definite joint in the one section.

So vertebrate fossil experts, please let me know what you think πŸ˜€

Didnt find much today other than this.large nautiloid, but it made the big hike worthwhile 😁 it looks to be in pretty good shape as well.

I think I found my third ever cetacean ear bone! This looks to be the worn bulla of what I am guessing is a whale based on the size. Swipe for the back view of the rock which looks to have some other bones in it.

Looks like I found a bunch of shark verts in a concretion, not as fortunate as @nz_paleo to have teeth in it though 😁 maybe there is one hiding in there somewhere πŸ€”

So satisfying when a large chunk of rock flakes away! Busy prepping that large shark vertebrae I found recently.

A very small suspected sawshark rostral spine I found on the weekend. There are more bits in the concretion so its having a soak in some acid to see if anything emerges 🀞Miocene era coastal deposit.

Time to start prepping some mega shark verts! Keep an eye out for the video, hoping to finish it this week still 😁

I managed to clean up the fossil shells and ID the species, turns out that the age is Eocene. Much older than I thought it would be! I used a great book by Beu and Maxwell which is available as a free 502 page PDF. Link is on my website mamlambofossils.com

Removed some of the matrix to show more of this cool shell. Age is around 25myo, not sure of the species. Swipe to see a before photo.

One of my best fossil finds, cetacean ear bones, is on it's way to Te Papa Tongarewa - Museum of New Zealand, for further study. It's quite rare to find the bulla and periotic together like this and it was my first ever ear bones that I found so will always be special to me.

Hopefully I will be able to give an update on it in the future 😁

Amazing preservation on this crab carapace! Mother nature did a great prep job as well, gonna slap a bit of B72 on there and call it done 😁

It's a pretty large concretion, weighs about 20kg. The species is a Tumidocarcinus giganteus from the middle Miocene. Found yesterday here in New Zealand.

Have a look at this great bone cluster! I think I can make out some fishy bits 😁 It was too large to move but great detail in it. Had a great day down at the beach today, I'll post some more of the finds tomorrow 🐟🦈

I was exploring the Mackenzie district today and found a layer of large shells! Great preservation on them and the matrix was nice and soft 😁 unsure on the age or species but will do some reading up on them.

It's a bit mind bending to find fossil shells so far from the ocean.

I'm re-looking at a block of Cretaceous bones I found earlier in the year. I thought it could have been paddle bones at first but now I'm thinking they look more like vertebrae after someone pointed it out. Any plesiosaur or mosasaur experts out there that can help me out?

My tiniest crab I've found so far πŸ¦€ of course it had to be in a 50kg piece of rock πŸ˜‚ managed to lug it the 3km back to the car, I didnt want to take a chance and try and break the rock into smaller chunks. I'm thinking it might be a tiny Tumidocarcinus giganteus, but not sure on that.

EDIT: Not a Tumidocarcinus 🀩

I was lucky enough to find this concretion and it's lid yesterday after it had fallen out of the cliff. It hasnt been bashed by the tide yet so in really good condition! Went back today to fetch it and managed to get it to the car after a 3 hour struggle πŸ˜‚
