New video up! Day 1 of Craig (DrCraigWoodward on Twitter) and my overnight fossil hunt. Found so many great fossils including these shark teeth (swipe to see them) which might be from Dalatias 😁 We had some heavy smoke coverage from Australia on that day and you can really see the strange hue it gave the footage and photos.
Have a look at the size of this bivalve I found! From a Miocene era deposit in New Zealand. The video of the hunt is out now, link in my bio. Swipe for a photo of the crab I found as well.
I just got back from an incredible 30km, overnight fossil hunt. We found some amazing fossils and had a great time exploring the coast. It was great seeing the covers that people don't normally get to. Fossil finds included: crabs, dolphin skull with earbones, shark teeth (tiny though!), whale ear bones, articulated whale vertebrae, gastropods and an amazing fossil penguin found by Craig! We even rescued a sheep stuck between two rocks 😁 Swipe for more pics.
My first whale ear bone!! After dozens of pieces of whale bone I finally found a whale ear bone, still in the concretion. My heart skipped a beat when I flipped it over and saw these 😁 Miocene era whale ear bone found about 10km into a 20km hike. Carried it with me for 2 days 😂
Found my first Cretaceous era shark tooth! Not sure what species it is, if anyone has any idea please comment. I'm glad it came out with some of the matrix still attached, I also prefer to have it in the matrix when possible 😁
I found the skeleton of a Little Blue penguin (korora) today. Not a fossil but will be using it as reference material for any other penguin bones I find. Only the wing was sticking out of a mud slip, wonder if it got buried in it or whether it was in a burrow. It was near Motunau so might be that subspecies. @marcusparks thought you would appreciate this 🐧
Had a great day fossil hunting in some coastal cliffs. What a beaut of a day we had, need to go and clean up my finds and see what I actually found 😁 Boots by @kathmandugear
My first pyritized nautiloid! Amazing preservation, such a shame it's only about half of it 😁 still, it is a real beauty!
***update*** It's a turtle skull!! Does anyone have any idea what I found today? Miocene beach deposit in North Canterbury, New Zealand. It's a small bone cluster and the bone looks like it should be quite identifiable 😁
Just found my best piece of petrified wood! I honestly thought it was a piece of driftwood but gave it a kick... turned out to be petrified! 🤩 The growth rings are so well defined, the preservation is incredible!
Flying saucer concretion anyone? 😁 It's such an interesting shape, you have to wonder what process shaped it. I'm not saying aliens... but it was aliens 😂 Swipe for a bonus cetacean bone in a large concretion I found today.
I'm busy exploring this new little bay, it has some great Miocene cliffs. Just have to hope the storm holds off!

Great piece of cretaceous marine reptile bone I found this morning in the Waipara river. It's from the Conway formation. I'm going to guess plesiosaur or mosasaur bone.
Second keeper for today at Motunua, this very pretty piece of petrified wood. The detail in the growth rings are amazing!
I found a nice section of bone today near Motunua 🤩 Looks to be some ribs and perhaps a vertebrae. Going to guess a cetacean of some type.
Found some unexpected petrified wood while looking for more of the whale skeleton 😁 I haven't found wood before at Motunua. It looks different from the petrified wood I find in the Ashley river further south.
Latest video is up, it includes a time-lapse of a fossil crab prep that took me around 8 hours to do. Link in my bio. I also found my largest fossil shark tooth. In this photo: Tumidocarcinus Giganteus crab with an unknown shark tooth. Crab and tooth were found and prepped by myself.
